The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer is a key team member for our Advanced Imaging product pipeline, leading and conducting a wide range of assignments in collaboration with the team. This represents an excellent opportunity if you are excited by building transformational surgical capabilities and working in a multi-functional environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, design, develop, and validate mechanical components and enclosures for laparoscopic visualization and advanced imaging products and concepts.
  • Lead project and technical work to meet the goals of assigned projects
  • Serve as a domain expert in evaluation of customer needs, potential technology solutions, and design of programs to advance these technologies
  • Partner with internal and external organizations to ensure technical solutions and approaches meet project needs
  • Lead and support a high level of communications across a team as well as with Surgical Robotics leadership.
  • Establish and maintain strong, productive relationships and collaborations across internal, external, and partner organizations.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering is required.

Experience and Skills:

Required:
  • A minimum of 8 years of related experience
  • Significant product design experience is required.
  • Experience with designing and developing medical devices and enclosures is highly preferred.
  • Strong product design and analysis experience, including an understanding of subsystem interfaces to overall system design is required
  • Experience with 3D CAD/CAM, design analysis software, and statistical analysis techniques is required
  • Direct experience working across company and organizational boundaries, in many cases without direct authority, to build relationships, define mutual goals, and collaborate to meet objectives.
  • Excellent collaboration and teaming skills with multi-functional teams, including external design houses, manufacturing engineering and suppliers to understand the considerations associated with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design to Cost (DTC), and working with other team members and consultants to produce prototypes and optimize designs for manufacturability.

Preferred:

  • Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and Geometric tolerance & tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T)
  • Deep understanding of design controls, with the ability to develop and execute design plans, design verification, and validation
  • Experience translating high-level customer needs into technical options and analyzing the tradeoffs and business impact.
  • The ability to develop and utilize appropriate design tools (e.g. 3D CAD models, FMEA’s, GD&T, tolerance analysis, FEA, DOE’s, simulated use testing, and statistical analysis).
  • Demonstrated experience in material selection appropriate to mechanically and thermally stable system design is desired.
  • Building prototypes, products, and systems for testing and evaluation.
  • Conducting and/or participating in technical design reviews of requirements, specifications, designs, etc.
  • Strong understand of design controls; the ability to develop and execute design plans, design verification and validation.

Other:

  • Domestic and international travel of up to 30% (manufacturing partners and Santa Clara for meetings)
